I'm a total newbie to sub formats. Could some please help me out in explaining how  RAR subs can be played with AVI files?! I recently downloaded a movie and then  found the sub to it but sub is in RAR format. I have now idea how to play it with the AVI movie. Someone please help me out in explaining how i should proceed. Thanks alot I really appreciate any kind of suggestions or efforts.

RAR is not a subtitle format: it's a compression format like ZIP.
So if you want to extract your subtitle from the rar I suggest you use winrar.
You can get that over here : http://www.rarlab.com/

Then tell us what format the subtitle is in and we can tell you how to play it.

Personally I prefer BSplayer  (www.bsplayer.com) to watch movies with subs.
It supports most subtitle formats.
If you name your subtitles the same as your movie (except for the extention) and put them in the same directory BSplayer automaticly loads the subs when you open the movie.
