If anyone can point me in the right direction for this, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

yes thank you, that's what i'm looking for. although I wouldn't mind some suggestions from those that have already modded their psps's either.

it still seems a bit complicated to me looking at those guides. I have been told that I should use the  Despertar del Cementerio at http://dark-alex.org/index.php?Dark_Alex=m33 to upgrade straight to 3.71-m33 and then 3.71-m33-4 thereafter. I've read the read me, but I still dont' get it. I will be using a loaned pandora battery and memory stick

Did you search it here?
This is the site where i go usually for how-to's.

I bought me a slim with firmware 3.60 . I'm afraid it's not possible (yet) to downgrade it. I have no pandora battery etc. either.

  IM |View profilesekhu  1/9/2008 20:47:15
fortunately i have a PSP original/Phat/FAT and I can downgrade. I'm borrowing the Pandora Battery and Memory Stick to downgrade. I've been told that I should use despertar del cementerio v3 to upgrade straight to 3.71 M33 and then update to 3.71 M33-4.

I'm just confused as to the steps to take.

Changes in version 3
-----------------------

- Coded a display driver that supports the psp slim screen in the mixed 1.50/3.40 kernel.
- The M33 instalaltion will install 3.71 M33-2, not 3.71 M33

---

Installation:

- If you have already a pandora ms, don't do this part. Otherwise,
format an ms using c+d mspformat or any other tool that allows to move
partition to ~250kb from first sector

Remove ms, usb and connect again usb and ms.
Make PSP and PSP/GAME dirs.

- Copy despertar_cementerio to PSP/GAME/

- Download 1.50, 3.40 and 3.71 update eboots and copy them to ms root with
150.PBP, 340.PBP and 371.PBP names.

- Use the app under a cfw with 2.x or 3.x kernel (be sure that kernel is
selected on recovery to the correct one (2.x or 3.x))

- Once finished, u will have msipl.bin on root. If you already have a pandora
ms, you don't have to do this step (ipl doesn't changes lol), otherwise,
use c+d msinst to install ipl on ms; or use dd command from unix, or any
hex-edit program to write on sector 16 on the physical drive.

- Now you can delete 340 and 150 PBP's, as they won't be used more; but 371.PBP
will be used for unbricker, so don't delete it.

- Now you have an universal pandora ms ready to go, and you just need a proper
battery. If you have 1.50 kernel access, use c+d tool. Otherwise, use corly149 tool.

Battery and ms will work on all psp and slims to this date.

Unbricking:

- Press X to install 3.71M33.

- Press O to install original 3.71 (rest of the process as the X option)

- Press [] to dump nand to nand-dump.bin. When done, psp will auto shutdown.

- Press L+R+HOME+start to restore nand from nand-dump.bin

This proccess is very dangerous, and you should *just* use it if it's your
last chance to get it working.

This is a physical restore process (not a logical one), and will try to make
a 100% exact clon of the dump.

If you are working with a dump that isn't yours, you will get either a brick
or a corrupt idstorage, depending on the firmware.

If while you are restoring your psp have got any damaged block more than
when you dumped it, you might also get a brick, depending on what block is it.

Works for both PSP and PSP Slim.

The bit in bold is what I understand up to, the rest I don't understand. My thoughts are that if I already have the pandora battery and memory stick I simply put despertar del cementerio v3 at the root of the memory stick, and then follow the on screen instructions. I'm not certain though.

  IM |View profilegm88    1/10/2008 05:44:21
True its not very straightforward.

"- Use the app under a cfw with 2.x or 3.x kernel (be sure that kernel is
selected on recovery to the correct one (2.x or 3.x))"

It says you need to run the application on a psp with cfw (custom firmware).
Yours is the original sony firmware i suppose.

Can you post the link to the tuto?

@John

"for fimwares higher than 3.50 you will need to use the pandora battery method go here"

Check out ThEdUvElKiNg's link.

Thank you ThEdUvElKiNg and gm88.

So If I'm not mistaking, I can't and I don't have to downgrade for my slim 3.60 .  I will look around for somebody who has the pandora battery. Or someone who I can finance to make such a battery.

  IM |View profilealanmp3    1/10/2008 10:52:37
im pretty sure that Datel have made a battery

Not sure how this one works, if it already has everything needed.

A pandora battery is when there is some wires stripped inside the battery if i remember, but i dont know much about it.

Id like my psp slim to run homebrew, but its far more complicated than the DS's R4DS card. Now theres simplicity...

  IM |View profilesekhu  1/10/2008 11:09:49
@GM88
The tutorial is what I posted. You can find the readme in the Despertar del Cementerio file in version 3 at http://dark-alex.org/index.php?Dark_Alex=m33

You can buy the pandora battery/memory stick from ebay for about £35 at least for the PSP Fat, not sure about the slim. The Datel Tool Battery is the same as a pandora battery as it puts the PSP into service mode so you can upgrade/downgrade/unbrick as you want.

However, I think the PSP slim uses a different sized battery and using a battery from a FAT works,. but is awkward - that's my guess any way, it's possible it fits fine, but iirc it doesn't.

  IM |View profilegm88    1/10/2008 15:24:28
Why not try ThEdUvElKiNg's  link , its works apperently without a pandora battery, it only requires a Lumine UMD for 1€.

well I've had some good fortune, the guy who's letting me borrow his pandora battery and memory stick has prepared the memory stick to do what it needs to do with little fuss. It's as simple as following the onscreen instructions, so i'm quite grateful for that

Guys,

Go to maxconsole.com for tutorials on PSP's.

There are videos on Youtube showing how to create a pandora battery and MagicStick.

You can get all PSP's on the market (Phat and Slim) to 3.71M33 firmware, but you need to have a PHAT psp in order to create the battery.

You use the PHAT battery in the slim... it works... it also doubles your battery life if you use a PHAT battery in the Slim as a normal battery.

Welcome to the PSP scene if it's your first time!

DrSchnicky!

P.s. checkout pspupdates.qj.net for updates as well as maxconsole.

Thanks for the info DrSchnicky!  :)

  IM |View profilejohnkeny  2/2/2008 21:14:29
3.71M33 is a bit crappy. Once you're there better go to 3.80 m33-5. That's a stable version.

  IM |View profilesekhu  2/4/2008 15:14:01
what makes you say 3.71 was crapppy jk? I found it stable and worked fine, though I'm up to 3.90 m33 now thanks to the support for patched network updates, it does it all for me :)

  IM |View profilejohnkeny  2/4/2008 21:16:24
I have a slim. So maybe it's not for a fat with 3.71. I could not play certain games I can play now. I searched the whole internet after a solution. Don't you find it strange that if you look at the site of the developper, you see older and newer versions but not 3.71 m33 ? And then I have read that 3.71 has more chanche of bricking. Don't know if that 's true. But I'm pretty happy with 3.80 now.

  IM |View profilesekhu  2/5/2008 08:25:08
hmm but on the official site it shows 3.71 there along with all the other versions: http://dark-alex.org/index.php?Dark_Alex=m33

  IM |View profilejohnkeny  2/5/2008 09:39:42
Ah, I see. I should have check before I wrote that. Last week it wasn't. But now it is. Or I had another and less complete page from somewhere. Didn't bookmarked it do'h. Sorry. In my experience 3.80 works great on a slim.

So you're using 3.90. Is the NO UMD working as they promise?

  IM |View profilesekhu  2/5/2008 15:56:15
i don't know about the UMD mode, I'm not even sure where to locate it. Unless it'#s the menu where you can enable  clock speed etc. I was told having a UMD in the PSP offered the best compatibility with games.

Enlighten me

  IM |View profilejohnkeny    2/5/2008 20:40:44
One of the changes in 3.90:
arch33 NO UMD: fixed (yet another) bug related with exiting with home. (infinite semaphore wait)

Go to the recovery menu. In my 3.80 I have it turned on:
UMD Mode: Normal -UMD required

Wich offers the best compatibility with games. That's true. Unless 3.90 overcomes that need.

  IM |View profilesekhu  2/5/2008 23:47:43
and how do i get to recovery mode? Hold some buttons on start up?

I'm sure having a  UMD inside all the time isn't really a problem is it?

  IM |View profilejohnkeny  2/6/2008 07:56:37
Having a UMD inside is no problem at all. I'm just curious what 3.90 brings.

To enter the recovery menu, power up the PSP while pressing the R-button. It takes some practice, but the recovery menu is something you just gotta see. And before you begin, write down the settings you have now. Good luck.

  IM |View profilesekhu  2/7/2008 00:13:56
I launmched into recovery mode, and found that the stuff was set to SonyN66P0 or something with UMD off setting. That was the default and all the games so far have worked with it. I'll enable if it requires usage by any game

  IM |View profileDrSchnicky  2/13/2008 19:49:14
Guys! Seriously? Sekhu?! I thought you'd be all over this... you've been on DivxS since I joined in 2000!

Anyhow... to change the emulation (Normal, NoUMD):
1) PRESS THE "Select" BUTTON in the XMB!! OMG! You don't need to go into recovery... you can do it on the FLY!!! There you can choose which driver you want for NoUMD. There's 3 I think off the top of my head, but I use the M33 one ;-)

2) Hard boot/reset the device. This can be done by holding the power switch up for 10 seconds (like a PC)... or PRESS "Select" in the XMB and choose "Reset". When you flick the power back on, or you used "Reset" hold down the Right Shoulder button.

If you read the "Readme"s, that is what they are there for. Also, you may find a lot of people "brick" their PSP's from not reading them. Although we have the mighty PANDORA now, ALWAYS READ THE "README"!

Cheers

Schnick!

(XMB -> Cross Media Bar = The thing you use to select UMD, memory stick in Music/Video/Game/etc.)
