Hi skroob11, AFAIK there is no stand alone DVD player that can play mkv (matroska) mkv's are video containers like avi. I am sure there are programs around that can grab the content of a mkv file and put it in an avi. If the video itself is mp4 or divx, you should be able to play it on a DVD player (but only if the resolution is less or equal PAL/NTSC, roughly 720x566 max. Everything higher will not work) On the other hand, many mkv contain videos encoded in h264 or the sound encoded in AAC or ogg. If that is the case, you will have to reencode I'm afraid. Look for a program called "mkvextract" Good addresses for all questions regarding video encoding/decoding are: www.videohelp.com www.doom9.org Hope that helps. Oh, and unless you don't want to meddle with all of the above, the best way to watch mkv certainly is hooking your PC to your LCD via HDMI or DVI. A good and versatile player is VLC (Video Lan Client). My laptop is borderline playing 720p and 1080i mkv. It plays better when I use "CoreAVC" (professional codec, not free!) together with Media Player Classic. It seems that the cpu load is less than with the built in codec of VLC, which often drops frames and is jerky. |
