We all know the problem. You have just downloaded a movie from the internet. Then you go searching for subtitles. Then you go searching for front and back covers. Then you grab the info from imdb.com Then you download the trailer And finally you are getting pretty angry that you don't have the chapter information and a menu system for all this. My idea is a .moi file placed alongside the video file. This file is basically a zip file with changed extension. This file should a directory structure like this.. /Subtitles/English/default.srt /Subtitles/English/directors comments.srt /Cover/front.jpg /Chapter/info.xml /Chapter/chapter-1.jpg /Info/imdb.com.xml /info/amazon.com.xml /info.xml The video player should auto detect the file and adjust settings according to this. The system should include an auto updater function, which connects to a site downloading new subtitles, and information. Maybe along with a menubuilder system that will allow us to create subtitles select menus and slideshows. http://www.nsplayer.org/ Has done something similar but the features are very limited. In the perfect world you download a movie from the internet. Fire up your media player based on file specs (size, movielenght, etc.) it downloads a .moi. Then it display a menu based on the configuration. The result would be user friendly and extremely powerful. What do you think of my idea? |

Wow, sounds nice... but there are a lot of questions left. here are 2: - which player will support your .moi, including the chapter menu etc etc? - where do you download them from? Sounds like a lot of traffic, potentially... .... Still, everything that makes watching divx movies more comfortable is appreciated. Even the scene recognizes that more and more. Almost 2 out of three releases contain subtitles, that's not bad for starters. Make it so. :-) |

Tee idea is great. You can do this thru some sort of a directshow plugin (like vobsub does it) not? But indeed, where are you going to get all necesary files from? You'd need a huge archive since movies come in much different formats. Maybe some sort of identification system (like a hash check for torrents) could help. |

Maybe some kind of database that keeps track of movie information Let's say you downloaded a 700mb divx movie with a AC3 sound track 600kbit etc etc. The server looks in a table finds the correct Movie. Now it goes looking in other tables... Let's say subtitle.srt is marked as compatible with the choosen video. Then the file get's added. Same goes for images and chapter data. There will be a need for a new player. (Or Maybe an existing player can be extended) I'm working as a PHP programming and could help writing the server part. If somebody is interessted in helping. |

Just a thought Subtitles and images could be assigned to a movie based on user verification. Example: If five user downloaded a movie tried playing it and found out they need english subtitles. They open a browser inline which finds all subtitles for the current movie title and language... They test and once they find one that fits the subtitles get marked as compatible with the movie. |

True, but still you'll need a unique identification for the file. Just saying a 600 MB file with a spesific name and certain bitrate isn't enough. You can drop in any file you want then and what with files that are renamed? They won't work. So some sort of unique kay based on file properties (bitrate and other things) should be created and that should be stored into a database. Do like the idea tho :) |
