Hey there. Couple of months ago i re-installed Windows XP onto my girlfriends computer. Thing is, after i installed XP, the CD Drive seemed to dissapear from "My Computer". The drive still has power as i can open and close the cd tray, but i dont understand why its not talking with the computer. I know i could just buy a new cd drive and install that, but that still doesnt answer the question why it broke in the first place. If i go into BIOS, its not listed. Any help in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks Alan |

IDE cable may have come loose, take the case apart blow out all the dust and make sure all cables are connected firmly. I would also find the drive make and model then download the latest drivers and install. Might also be worth going to microsoft.com and doing a complete windows update. |

If it's not listed in the bios it doesn't sound like your problem has anything to do with the installation of XP or drivers. |

Alan ... last time i had this problem it was a faulty IDE cable... i doesn't sound like anything to do with the registry or anything in windows since u don't see it in the bios. This could also be a faulty IDE port... try another harddrive or cdrom in its place to see if that works |

Like Candy and Rafke say, if it doesn't appear in the bios, then it really has nothing to do with the registry or windows. That cable can only be lose 1mm for it not to work. |
