If you want to burn it as a "DVD video" you need DVD video files :o)
There are several programs which can do that for you.
One of the easiest is DIKO. It's a one click solution with good quality.

(if you want better quality you need more difficult tools).

Consigliere, if you speak italian pm me please.

Nope, unfortunately, i dont speak italian.
BTW, i searched for the program DIKO on this site without any results !!

ok sorry i thought you did, and that would have made things easier. as regards DIKO i've just found a few download pages through google.

as regards your question it depends.

if you want the avi to become a real DVD you need to re-encode it. otherwise, if you have a standalone player which supports divx xvid that won't be necessary and you only need to burn your avi normally, as data.

a cd will also do in case. i suggest you burn the avi on a rewritable and test.

My bad : the tools is actually called : D.I.K.O.
You can find it over here :
http://www.vmesquita.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=0

What Lyli says is also true, just remember to burn it as "data" and not "DVD video" in that case.

I loved Diko.. untill ConvertXtoDVD showed up

http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

reason is that diko used to take about 4-6 hrs while ConvertX2DVD takes between 40-60min tops with the same results if not better

i use it too, i make a dvd from an avi in the best quality mode, then add a menu and subtitles using dvd lab pro.

i have explained the whole procedure here:

http://divxstation.com/comm/thread.asp?i=4&t=61216&r=175&page=7

unfortunately, these apps need buying but it's well spent money.

cool .. thx for the tip lyl..
I have been looking for a nice menu tool..
brcause recently i have been burning 2 or 3 animated movies on the same dvd (easier for the kids).. and i have tried a couple of menu programs!

didn't like any of them ! so going to give dvd lab pro a look.. and even if u have to buy it.. thats no problem.
I will get it on sale :)

i'm not a photoshop wizard, yet i am becoming quite skilled also thanks to this program.
psd menus are also fun to make, i use printscreens and add text or sometimes i use the existing writings after cropping them (see la femme nikita's logo for example), using the magic wand to remove everything i don't need and saving them as layers so that they will become menu buttons. in dvd lab pro you can also create your own library with your own custom buttons.

psd files for a dvd lab pro menu have to be 720x540, but you'll see a kind of frame all around the menu window. if you wanna make sure to be able to see the whole menu on every tv you should stay inside the most internal of the frames, as in my example.
i have made a printscreen of the frame only and i have made a psd out of it on a transparent background then i drag&drop+shift it on the menu i'm making just to make sure to keep what needs to be seen on tv inside the frame. i can send you the psd of the frame if you want.

i am personalising almost all my dvds. removing the audio i don't need from dvd9 and using a static menu i can keep almost the same video quality as the original dvd without renouncing to the extras, if i want to keep them. however dvd lab pro also supports dynamic menus with sound. i have never played with that yet, though.

another advantage of dvd lab pro compared to convertx2dvd is that you can also edit the font+size and colour of subtitles. in theory that's also possible in convertx2dvd, but it never worked for me there.

you can link as many menus as you want and also make scene selection menus. i did that for my back up copy of "what's eating gilbert grape". i personalised that too using the original menu background and cutting off squares for the scenes to appear from behind.

Example: la femme nikita menu 1

la femme nikita menu 2

what's eating gilbert grape's scene selection menu (all the numbers at the bottom and the "main menu" writing are buttons):

Looks excellent Lylia.

:)

ahh nicey nicey lyl..

maybe u can help on something as well then ....

i can do menus basicly with the background of my choice but what i wanted to do is.. have no text at all..
just thumbnails of the movies (basicly animated for the kids to see and pick)

do u know how to do that ??

you can probably make a kind of scene selection menu and then link every pic to a different video.
in dvd lab pro you can basically link everything to everything else.

for example see my scene selection menu, the screenshots are the first shots of every film chapter. you can probably make it differently and link each picture to chapter one of each different video.

i have never tried it but i think it is possible. i'll try it and let you know.
actually you can also use pre-made scripts and have a wider range of options that way. if you're into that it'll be a breeze for you. i cannot do that so i use simple links.

in any case once you have the program and see how user friendly it is, you'll also see that this is easier to do than explain.

I think you can try Imtoo dvd creator, but it is a shareware
As I know it update V3.0 resently, it seems a major update

You can get more information here: http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-creator.html

Hey, I noticed that someone recommend ImTOO dvd creator, I’m its user, actually, the V2.0 was not very good, and it often failed. But gladly, ImTOO updated this software recently, the V3.0 has quite a lot changes comparable to V2.0, from the user interface, operation to the function; this is why I reply until now, i prefer to recommend ImTOO dvd creator V3.0.
