I would advise installing the following *separate* codecs, in the order listed below:

DivX 5 Codec
DivX 3.11 Alpha
XViD
AC3 Filters
ffdshow

They should all be available in the software section of this site.  Big 'codec packs' like ace and nimo can often cause more trouble than they're worth, for most files the ones above are all you need.

Also if you have trouble with a particular file afterwards install G-Spot you can use it to see what codecs are used in a particular file, then go and get the appropriate codec.

good luck,

as mmeira and plazz said, use ffdshow and ac3, ffdshow handles all pretty good and  unless you encode you don't need any of the others.  though you could install but all will be played by libavcodec (the one ffdshow uses) still you can set ffdshow to use the respective codecs for playback instead of libavcodec.

for ac3, extract in a dir that u will keep, when u run registerfilters-2k.cmd for win2k/xp or the one for 98, do not delete or remove the dir.
