topic says all... and what does PDTV mean? I know HDTV means high definition tv..

  IM |View profilewatchout    6/6/2003 16:49:48
poor definition tv??

Seriously.. I wouldn't know :P

  IM |View profilegeyser  6/6/2003 16:54:23
PDTV = pirated digital tv...usually upconverted to hdtv from 480i or dvd res(480p which is the case for all shows on FOX)

HDTV = high definition tv..native 1080i or 720p source

sometimes the groups just label one as the other...but for your own purposes, the above is accurate

  IM |View profiledjkoolaide  6/6/2003 17:01:15
hold on.. is PDTV illegal or is that just the term used for it?

  IM |View profilegeyser  6/6/2003 18:35:30
the whole tv scene is illegal..analog or digital

it doesn't really matter..

and i guess it is the term used for it

HDTV is a real term and PDTV of course is used in the scene only..no such thing as pirated digital tv in real life :D

on a side note, HD Tivo's are coming out later this year..

"There has been much confusion in the TV rip scene about
what HDTV and PDTV mean. For the record, here is how
SFM defines these terms.
The HDTV label is given to releases that are both
purely digital, AND are broadcast at either 720p
(60fps) or 1080i (30fps).
The PDTV label is given to releases with purely digital
sources with direct digital stream extraction such as
via a DVB-{S,T} pci card or a HDTV card. This includes
non-HDTV resolution digital transmissions such as the
Enhanced Digital TV format used by Fox that is captured
with an HDTV card. This does NOT include a captures
from a digital source with an intermediate analog
conversion, e.g. a digital satellite reciever box with
S-Video out to a capture card. These we label as TVRips"

a P, and an H

just because its 3 am and i am bored

but p doesnt stand for pirated, it stands for pure, usually has to do with digital cable
while hdtv requires its own tuner card i believe

cheers

nice explanations guys =) thnx!!

ive been thinking of buying a Hauppauge WinTV-D card... i know it's not hdtv but its DTV... so if i ripped from that, it would be labled PDTV?

  IM |View profilejohnkeny  6/7/2003 17:00:14
One more for the General Overview. Thanks guys!

John :-)))

well first of all dtv has nothing to do with digital cable..because digital cable isn't really digital..it's a load of shit..it's analog converted to digital..so there's no difference between satellite channels and cable tv channels..even though satellite claims "digital quality"....it all boils down to who is broadcasting at the highest bitrate

the station has to be broadcasting digitally and only the local networks and hbo, hdnet, hdnet movies, showtime and espn are doing a real digital feed

  IM |View profiledjkoolaide  6/7/2003 21:39:15
yeah thats what i was thinking... digital cable can't really be DTV because its later converted to digital after the digital box recieves it. but my question is that if i did get a DTV card, will it be real DTV - as in MPEG-2 data coming through to that card? :)

  IM |View profilerezsbc  6/9/2003 08:11:22
digital cable isn't really digital"....

care to explain?  It's digital transmission from the cable co to your home...can't deny that.  Even if the source broadcast is converted to digital by the cable co rather than a direct digital stream from the tv station it still means top quality tv as the cable co will obviously have direct high quality links to the tv station, be they analogue or digital, and so your not gonna get "bad reception" which of course is the main problem with analogue tv signals.

Am I wrong?

=rez=

  IM |View profilerezsbc  6/9/2003 08:13:09
I don't know abou the Haupage card but yeah you just grab the incoming bit stream...so you have on your HD an exact copy of what is being transmitted at the other end :)

  IM |View profileECLiPSE  6/9/2003 13:58:37
uhm, no, dude, the cable box is what makes it digital. the cable company does NOT convert it to digital, and then send it to your home. if the cable company made it digital before they sent the signal to you, then why is there still fuzzy pictures on digital cable boxes? i see them alll the time.. lol

I would like to know which one is better.  PDTV or HDTV?  (i.e. which one has better quality)

  IM |View profileScHiZo  5/6/2004 20:46:28
hdtv I believe, the hdtv rips I see are better

  IM |View profiledjkoolaide  5/6/2004 22:52:16
wow... quite old topic :P

  IM |View profilerezsbc  5/7/2004 18:52:44
eclipse.....

I'm afraid your wrong.  if people have digital tv with bad "reception" then it is almost certainly caused by the analogue link from decoder to tv.....

companies simply cannot sell something and call it "digital tv" if, in fact, it is nothing more than an analogue broadcast!

=rez=

p.s. yeah quite an old topic only realised when I seen my other reply!

  IM |View profilezuidbob  5/7/2004 19:14:52
PDTV = FOX networks
For as far i know all the other station are HDTV (resolutions).

For the rest (resolution stuff) i agree with the reply's above ;P
