The article is not online yet. To check it out, click on "read article" above the post. johnkeny is right. You could split up the paragraphs a little. Good job, Stinger :) |

to all those who find this article via google: THERE ARE MANY ERRORS in this article. You mix aspect ratios or you are at least inconsistent, PAL video (with which you are SO familiarized) in natively 720x576 in NON-SQUARE 1:1,094 pixel width to height ratio, making 768x576 a correct PC resolution. It is 4:3. Resolutions you mentioned, like 480x384, 640x512, are NOT 4:3. They maintain the incorrect aspect (the characters appear 'thin') of image ported to a PC from a non-square pixel device which TV, DV camcoreder, tuner, are. cheers. 512x384 is ok. |

Hence the titel is ' 'legal' (official) resolutions', and not 'desirable encoding resolutions'. This is after all something you had better do yourself as each movie, apart from a view choices in aspect ratio, can also feature pseudo-letterboxes from the digital scanner that recorded the analogue film format on which the shots were made. So after cropping this (the encoder otherwise darkens the edges even more than the orginal encoding did from its own added borders) you still need to resize for the 4 (will cause some restrictions in h264 to kick in), 8 or 16 pixels for the sides of each block your own encoder will use. Indeed, you will also need to factor in the pixel aspect ratio and display device type. But this, again, is not what this article is about. At any rate, here's a simple and quick explanation: http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/tvbranding/picturesize.shtml For more thorough information, and a howto, doom9 is obviously the best start. |

Ah, there was a part 2. In that case "For Pal, the best resolutions are:" onward it's just not that simple because there IS no best resolution without first knowing the characteristics of the source material AND the settings you pass to the encoder. |
