There are still many downloaders who completely ignore the .sfv file and have no idea what it is and what it does so I decided to make a little tutorial for you guys, same for uploaders.

Introduction

An SFV (Simple File Verificator) file contains information about the files it was created from, and stores records about the integrity of the file(s). A CRC check can be performed using an SFV program which checks the .sfv file with the actual files (usually downloaded files) to verify whether they are corrupted or not.

The Use of an SFV File

The use of an SFV file is to find out which of the files are corrupted, very often download .rar files. Once the ‘broken’ files are found these can either be repaired as explained below or redownloaded.

How to create an SFV File

An SFV file can be created very easily and fast with an SFV program like:

hkSFV32 which can be found at www.big-o-software.com

which is my personal favourite. Other SFV programs include pdSFV, WinSFV, Easy SFV Creator, etc.

Once the program is installed the basic creation of an SFV file is very similar for each program. With hkSFV for example, you basically:

Click on ‘Create SFV’

Select the folder in which the files you wanted the .sfv to be made from are stored

And that’s it! The SFV file can be found in the same directory as the files now and usually takes up very little space – for 50 files of 15mb each about 6 kb.

How to Check Files for CRC Integrity

If your SFV program is associated with the .sfv programs simply Open up the .sfv (if the .sfv is in the same directory as the files you want to check with hkSFV).

If you perform an SFV check and the SFV program tells you that certain .rar files are corrupt then if there is only a small error these can be fixed in WinRAR by selecting the file and clicking on ‘Repair’ in the toolbar (this can only be done if the .rar files have been created the ‘Put recovery record on’ has been ticked).
